Scripps News and Decision Desk HQ project that Maryland State Sen. Sarah Elfreth won Tuesday’s Democratic primary for a seat in the U.S. Congress.

Elfreth defeated Harry Dunn, a former U.S. Capitol Police officer who defended the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, and nearly two dozen other candidates in a crowded race.

In the Maryland State Assembly, Elfreth’s district includes the capital Annapolis.

The winner of the seat in November will replace Democratic Maryland Rep. John Sarbanes, who has held the post in the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms. Sarbanes is one of about two dozen Democrats who will not seek re-election this cycle.

In other races in Maryland, Angela Alsobrooks, currently the county executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland, is the winner of the Democratic Senate primary.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are the projected winners of their respective presidential primaries in the state.
