The WNBA expansion team that will begin play in San Francisco in 2025 today unveiled its name, logo and colors, introducing the Golden State Valkyries.

Valkyries are warrior women from Norse mythology.

“This brand is Golden State’s modern interpretation of Valkyries: strong, bold and fierce,” the team said in a press release.

The Valkyries are the league’s first expansion team since 2008.

“Communities own sports teams, so it’s only fitting that when we began the brand identity development process, we really listened to fans and chose a name they wanted,” said Amanda Chin, senior vice president of marketing for the Golden State Warriors. .

“Surveys and social media show that Valkyries was by far the most prominent. After completing a rigorous process to research and approve the name, we worked around the clock to build the supporting brand elements that would proudly represent our players and fans.

The team colors are black and violet. The logo is a “V” stylized with other symbols, including the Bay Bridge, which the team says represents the link between Chase Center in San Francisco, where the team will play its home games, and Oakland across the bay, where the franchise plays its home games. its headquarters. The bridge tower is shaped like a sword, often depicted with Valkyries in mythology, and the 13 lines coming out of it pay tribute to the Valkyries becoming the WNBA’s 13th team.

The WNBA is expected to announce the award of an expansion franchise to Toronto soon.
